 Indoor Air Quality IAQ

Healthy indoor air quality is a very big deal to us.  Every new home we build includes an ERV/HRV. Most experts agree that an ERV in our climate, with ductwork separate from heating/cooling ducts in big homes, achieves the best indoor air quality.

ERVs are very affordable and should be standard in all new construction. Some building code departments are beginning to require them, a clear indication of their importance. Green homes with ERVs tend to have better air quality than ones that rely only on filters, VOC-Free finishes and building materials. We can help you further reduce the VOCs as much as you like.

Building Science

Asheville and Western North Carolina are in the challenging building climate of Mixed Humid.

This means high levels of rain, humidity and almost equal needs of heating and cooling.

Third party certifications are greatly improving their inspection processes. There is still a serious lack of best practices used by most builders here.  From poor HVAC design to improper flashing, bad practices are quite common. It may not be a good idea to hire an asheville builder who doesnt know the difference in a Weather Resistive Barrier (WRB) and an Air Barrier if you plan on building a home that performs well.

There are big problems emerging with a number of  Asheville green homes built as recently as the past two years. Mold, stagnant air and discomfort are problems not easily solved after a home is built. We have yet to experience issues like these because we know the right balance of alternative and conventional methods to dramatically reduce energy use while increasing IAQ.

We do offer Design-Build services which can be a huge advantage to working with or without architects.
